First Impressions

Son Net is one of those hotels that is far better in person than online. The website does not fully capture the scale, the layering of the interiors, or the warmth of the design.

Originally a 17th-century Mallorcan finca, the property has been restored in a way that feels considered and authentic. There are multiple sitting rooms, quiet corners and outdoor terraces to discover, giving the hotel a genuine sense of depth and intimacy.

Setting

Son Net sits in a quieter, more rural part of Mallorca, surrounded by greenery and low hills rather than the island's beach clubs and coastal buzz. It feels more connected to the landscape of old estates and countryside than to the sea, which gives it a calmer, more grounded atmosphere.

Despite its seclusion, Palma is only around 20 minutes away, and Deià around 30. It does not have the cliffside drama of somewhere like La Residencia, but it offers something more private and understated.

Arrival

Originally, we only visited Son Net for lunch. We had been deciding between staying at La Residencia or Son Net and chose La Residencia, as it felt like the more obvious option. Since we were already in Mallorca, we thought we may as well see Son Net while we were there, so we booked lunch and arranged a tour of the property. We were so impressed by what we saw that we ended up reserving a night and returning a few days later for a proper stay.

The property feels relaxed and laid-back, but never in a way that seems overly casual. Driving up the winding hill towards the hotel, everything begins to feel quieter and more peaceful, and the setting immediately has a calming effect.

The staff were friendly and capable throughout the stay. Service was consistently good, and we were well looked after, but it remained slightly surface-level. It never quite reached the intuitive, relationship-driven style of service that defines the very best Mediterranean hotels. There was nothing we could specifically fault, and nothing was done badly, but it stopped short of feeling exceptional.

The Room

Rooms at Son Net are generous in size, which immediately adds to the sense of value. The décor is one of the hotel's strongest assets. It is layered, textured and confident without feeling theatrical. There is real personality in the design, but it never tips into gimmick. It feels expensive in a quiet way.

We stayed in the Grand Son Net Suite, which had a separate sitting area and bedroom, along with two queen beds. This would work particularly well for a family with younger children, or for friends who do not mind sharing. It had a lovely balcony that overlooked the pool and gardens.

The bathrooms are equally spacious, and feel notably more traditional than the rest of the property. Where much of the hotel has been thoughtfully renovated, the bathrooms retain a lot of their original character, marble baths, marble sinks, older fittings, giving them a sense of history that the rest of the property has largely moved on from.

During our stay we were also shown a number of other rooms, including one with a private garden area. Whilst the room itself was beautiful, the garden itself felt slightly neglected and could benefit from a little more attention. Worth keeping in mind when selecting a room.

Dining

Son Net offers three dining options. The main restaurant, which sits on the terrace and continues inside, serves haute Mallorcan cuisine for dinner and hosts breakfast each morning. The gazebo, beside the pool and overlooking the mountains, is open for lunch and offers a more relaxed Mediterranean menu. The bar operates throughout the day, serving tapas and classic bar dishes.

The dining across all three is a standout. Breakfast in particular is excellent. It has the abundance and generosity you would associate with a buffet, but none of the atmosphere that usually comes with one. Staff circulate with trays of fresh pastries for guests to pick from, alongside a proper à la carte menu. Lunch and dinner were equally strong. Given the hotel's somewhat isolated location, the quality of the food matters more than it might elsewhere, and Son Net delivers.

Facilities

The outdoor pool area is particularly well done. One side is lined with cabanas you can use free of charge, a refreshing detail given how many hotels now monetise them. Each feels genuinely private, with enough separation that you are not in direct view of other guests. On the opposite side, day beds and loungers sit in the open sun.

There is also an indoor spa pool, beautifully designed but noticeably cold. It looks the part, though it is difficult to imagine spending much time in it.

What we appreciated most was the shift in energy from day to night. During the day, the property can feel almost empty, which enhances the sense of space. By evening, live music and guests gathering at the bar create a real atmosphere, social without being chaotic. The contrast with La Residencia, where we stayed on the same trip, was striking. Son Net feels considerably more private and relaxing.

Service

Service sits solidly in the very good category rather than exceptional. Staff are helpful, polite and responsive throughout. Engagement, however, tends to stay transactional. You are not likely to develop the kind of familiarity or recognition that elevates a stay from good to memorable. There is nothing wrong and nothing to fault. It simply does not go beyond good.

Would We Stay Again

Yes, without hesitation. Son Net was a welcome surprise for us. It exceeded our expectations, turning what began as a lunch visit into a clear sense that we had to stay here. As an independent luxury hotel, it delivers on all fronts, including value at this standard.

Son Net is at its best as a calm retreat, a place to decompress between exploring the rest of the island rather than a base for constant activity. For that kind of stay, it is an easy recommendation.

Final Thoughts

Son Net quietly overdelivers. It may not have the dramatic positioning of La Residencia or the coastal glamour of the island's beach properties, but it offers strong design, generous space and genuinely good food at a price point that feels fair.

For travellers who care about interiors and want a stylish, private base away from the obvious beach scene, it is one of Mallorca's best options. The value, by the standards of luxury Mallorca, is hard to argue with.
